Heather Wier Vaught, Chief Counsel to the Speaker and Parliamentarian of Illinois House of Representatives, honored at the 2016 Rise Up and Reach Back Luncheon in Springfield

It wasn’t that long ago when women were recognized for being the first female in law schools, law firms, or judiciary.  However, without the “first” women reaching back and bringing along the next generation of women, we would never have had the “second” or “hundredth” woman lawyer, partner, judge, etc. The Rise Up and Reach Back Luncheon is an opportunity for the WBAI and WBF to pay tribute to extraordinary women who have demonstrated visionary approaches to their professional accomplishments, while freely giving back to other women and members of the legal profession, and making a contribution to the well-being and empowerment of women as a whole. Each year at a lunch in Chicago and Springfield, we recognize tremendous women who did not only further their career by reaching for the stars, but also made sure they were not alone at the top.

Lisa Madigan, Illinois Attorney General, and Anita Alvarez, Cook County State’s Attorney, at the 2015 Annual Scholarship Reception.

Each fall, we honor several Illinois women law students with a scholarship to recognize their high educational credentials, contributions to their communities and enthusiasm for a future career in law.  Esther Rothstein, who led the Foundation for many years, believed that the money raised should go to the students and thus started the long tradition of the “spaghetti lunch.”  Please join us each Fall, hear the remarkable stories of the students we honor, enjoy a great spaghetti luncheon and spend time with both new and old friends.
